CPI (ML) to back resistance movements in Jharkhand

CPI (ML) to back resistance movements in Jharkhand

ANUMEHA YADAV

"State's politics dominated by nexus of corporate and politicians … open to allying with other Left forces"

Leaders and over 800 delegates of the CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation passed resolutions on Wednesday on the national and international situation, including the agrarian and rural struggles, on the movement against violence and for equal rights and the working class movement on the second day of the party's 9th congress going on in Ranchi. The convention was attended by CPI (ML) delegates from Nepal, Bangladesh and Australia.

"Repression is the default setting of the Indian State's response to people's movements. Our party will back resistance movements and progressive adivasi struggles going on in Jharkhand. The Left movement played an important role in the movement for creation for Jharkhand after Independence. Now, the State's politics is dominated by a nexus of corporate and politicians and we are open to allying with other Left forces to challenge this," said CPI (ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya.

Laws being flouted

"The Fifth Schedule norms, laws such as Santhal Pargana Act, Chottanagpur Tenancy Act are being openly violated in the State. Panchayat elections were conducted after over 30 years in 2010 but no power has been given to panchayati raj institutions. It is the same pattern in the setting up of POSCO plant in Odisha," he said.

The congress opposed the United Progressive Alliance's "privatisation of natural resources and in sectors dealing with people's basic rights like education and healthcare." The resolution expressed opposition to projecting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as Bharatiya Janata Party's Prime Ministerial candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. "Modi today is an icon of not just aggressive communalism but of unbridled corporate rule in a police State. Struggles against communal terror, corporate capital and State repression and criminalisation of Muslims as part of the imperialist war on terror, which are all inextricably linked to Modi's brand of politics, must all be combined to effectively combat the Modi model," the resolution said.

Solidarity with Tamils

The resolution on international issues extended its solidarity with Tamil community in Sri Lanka and with Palestinians movement for their independence.

The four-day congress will end with a jan vikalp (people's alternative) rally in Ranchi on April 7. "We want to strengthen the idea of a people-led movement to find an alternative to the current model of development," said Kavita Krishnan, member of the Central Committee of CPI (ML).
