THE JANUARY 28TH DC MOBILIZATION
In Memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

THE SHAME AND AGONY OF
AMERICA'S DISAPPEARED

FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 2011

ASSEMBLY TIME 12 NOON

NEW YORK AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
1313 New York Avenue, NW
Washington, DC

*FROM THERE WE MARCH TO THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT*

This very important mobilization for justice will begin with jumu'ah, shortly after 12 noon, at the historic New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at 13th Street & New York Avenue NW, in downtown Washington, DC.  The subject matter for the khutbah will be relevant for the occasion, insha'Allah.

Jumu'ah will be followed by a short organizing/logistical meeting (and refreshments). Between 2:00 – 2:30 we will begin our march in unison from the church to the front of the U.S. Department of Justice for the rally.

Insha'Allah (God willing), we expect a significant number of Muslim families who have been forced to suffer the brutal dispossession of a loved one (i.e. a husband, a father, a brother, a sister, a son, a daughter) – in the name of "national security" and a "War on Terrorism" - to be present to speak of their loss.

IT'S TIME FOR MUSLIM FAMILIES WHO HAVE BEEN SUFFERING IN SILENCE TO COME OUT OF THE SHADOWS. AND IT'S PAST TIME FOR THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY (AS A COMMUNAL FORCE FOR GOOD) TO STAND UP!!!

THE JAN. 28TH RESENTENCING OF ALI ASAD CHANDIA

Ali Asad Chandia, a young and mild-mannered widely respected school teacher, was wrongfully convicted (in our humble opinion) and subsequently incarcerated for providing "material support" to a group fighting the Indian occupation of Kashmir.

The Court of Appeals for the second time has agreed with Ali that the District Judge Claude Hilton did NOT justify his use of the "terrorism enhancement" when he sentenced Ali Asad to 15 years of imprisonment in 2006.

A "terrorism enhancement" is a tool used to inflate the sentences for any "normal" crimes done in the furtherance of "terrorism." Had Ali's crime not been associated with "terrorism," his maximum sentence would have been about six years.

Since the Court of Appeals is not convinced that the lower judge justified using the terrorism enhancement in Ali's sentencing, it "vacated" the sentence, which means Ali technically has no sentence at this time. Thus, Ali is scheduled to be brought back to Alexandria (VA) for a re-sentencing for the second time. This re-sentencing is scheduled for the morning of Friday, January 28.

As this will occur the same day as the demonstration at the Justice Department, we urge our supporters and other concerned and committed folk to be present for Ali's court appearance in Alexandria, and then join us for the mobilization in downtown Washington!
