Retirement fund body EPFO today said its corpus of about Rs 3.5 lakh crore will now be managed only by one of the existing fund manger, SBI, for a three month period ending June 30 as an interim arrangement.

In its trustees meet here, the body turned down the proposal to give three month extension to its other existing fund managers -- ICICI Pru, HSBC and Reliance Capital .

These three private players were earlier managing bulk of the fund-- close to Rs 3 lakh crore--of the total corpus.

"The EPFO's apex decision making body Central Board of Trustees has decided that SBI alone will manage the entire retirement fund for the interim period of three months beginning April 1," Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge said.

The term of the four fund mangers was to expire on March 31. The EPFO had planned to appoint new fund managers for next three financial years beginning April 1.

The CBT headed by the Union Labour Minister came to this interim arrangement as EPFO is yet to complete the process of appointing new fund managers.

EPFO had started the process last year after it engaged credit rating agency CRISIL for appointing and later monitoring the performance of new fund managers.

As many as 11 Asset Management Companies (AMCs) have evinced interest to manage EPFO's huge corpus which receives incremental deposits of about Rs 30,000 crore every year.

Besides existing AMCs managing EPFO corpus, seven new firms, including Kotak Securities, Securities Trading Corporation of India , UTI Securities and ICICI Securities have expressed interest to manage the retirement fund.

In order to avoid any controversy amidst the recent outbreak of scams, EPFO had sent its tender document to Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) for vetting.

EPFO had engaged private fund mangers for the first time in July 2008. Prior to that SBI alone used to manage the fund.

Trouble ahead: Income Tax department tells EPFO to tax premature PF withdrawals

NEW DELHI: Withdrawing provident fund balances prematurely could become an expensive proposition. The Income Tax department has asked the 3,70,000 crore Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to tax all withdrawals by workers with less than five years of PF savings.

All long-term savings instruments that grant tax benefits to investors, come with a lock-in period - be it public provident fund, infrastructure bonds or equity-linked savings schemes.

Though tax laws also spell out a five-year lock-in period for PF savings, the EPFO has never levied any tax on withdrawals before this period. The organisation recently found that over 70% of its members pull out their PF savings before completing three years of continuous service and PF contributions.

At a meeting with the tax department on Monday, the EPFO contested their diktat to deduct tax at source in such withdrawal cases.

The issue could snowball into another battle between the finance and labour ministries, which have argued extensively over the 9.5% PF rate for 2010-11 and equity investments.

"We have pointed out that the statutory salary limit for EPF coverage is Rs 6,500 per month (or Rs 78,000 a year)," a PF department official told ET. "We can't tax savings of individuals that don't even come under the taxable income bracket," he said.

Budget 2011-12 has raised the tax-free income limit to Rs 180,000. The EPFO is also learnt to have stressed that the taxation provisions put the onus of deducting the tax on employers.

Incidentally, employers who run their own PF trusts already deduct tax for premature withdrawals by workers. Inspection reports of these trusts, which are regulated by EPFO, often advise them against deducting tax at source.

"The tax computation is very complex as it requires all past tax breaks to be reversed and interest income to be added to the amount," said a senior official with a firm that advises company-run PF trusts.

NEW DELHI: Faced with high defaults in provident fund contributions by employers, the Employees Provident Fund Organisation , or EPFO, has decided to give monthly updates of contributions instead of an annual statement.

The EPFO expects this will bring instances of defaults by employers to the notice of workers, who, in turn, will put pressure to demand their dues.

The EPFO, which manages retirement savings of more that 5 crore workers, has been computerising its offices across the country and will be in a position to provide monthly information from the next fiscal.

At present, subscribers only get a small slip at the end of the fiscal with just the opening and closing balance and have no idea about how the amount has grown through the year.

"Often subscribers do not calculate what the total amount should be and do not notice even if contributions have not been made in particular months," Central Provident Fund Commissioner Samirendra Chatterjee told ET. Once monthly data is available, omissions can be easily identified, he added.

The default amount identified by the EPFO through periodic inspection of random establishments in 2009-10 was about 166.12 crore. The EPFO expects more complaints about defaulting employers once the monthly statements are made available to employees.

Defaults have been highest for establishments in Tamil Nadu followed by Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka and Kerala.

"Every subscriber is expected to have a detailed statement from 2012-13," Chatterjee said.

Both employers and employees are mandated to contribute 12% of basic pay to the fund every month. The entire contribution to the fund is usually made by employers who deduct the employees share from their pay and add it their own contribution.

About 20,000 crore to 30,000 crore is added to the corpus every year.

India's dream of a World Cup triumph at home is one step closer after their bowlers suffocated Pakistan's batsmen to set up a 29-run victory in the semi-final in Mohali. Saturday's decider will now be a battle of the hosts, and while Sri Lanka might have been surprised by the strength of India's bowling effort, they would also have taken note of a slightly lacklustre batting performance.

In the end, India's 260 for 9 was enough as their bowlers did a fine job, but had Pakistan helped themselves, the target could have been so much more gettable. Sachin Tendulkar was dropped four times in his 85, MS Dhoni was put down once and while Wahab Riaz was extremely impressive in collecting five wickets, Umar Gul had one of his most forgettable days, wilting under the pressure of a World Cup semi-final.

By contrast, India's display in the field was much more professional, and that was the difference in a match that lived up to the extreme pre-match hype. The decision to leave R Ashwin out to make room for Ashish Nehra was an odd choice on a pitch offering plenty of spin, but Nehra and his bowling colleagues built the pressure and gave Pakistan's batsmen little to attack after they made a promising start and reached 70 for 1.

The Indians didn't give away an extra until the 37th over of the innings, and the way they put together strings of dot balls and tight overs was key to their success. Munaf Patel picked up two victims and Yuvraj Singh made up for his golden duck with a pair of wickets, but the most important breakthrough came when Harbhajan Singh bowled Umar Akmal for 29.

Akmal had struck a pair of sixes off Yuvraj, driving him over the sight screen and pulling him over midwicket, and anything was possible while he was at the crease. But Dhoni called on Harbhajan to replace Yuvraj, and with the first ball of his spell he came around the wicket and pushed one across Akmal, taking the off stump when the batsman played for the spin.

Shahid Afridi also fell to Harbhajan when he skied a catch off a full toss, and the obdurate Misbah-ul-Haq was left to steer the chase. He found it difficult to lift his tempo and was the last man out, caught on the boundary for 56 in the final over, but he ate up 76 deliveries and had he shown some more intent earlier, Pakistan might have had a chance.

It was a disappointing end for Pakistan after their top order gave them hope. Mohammad Hafeez made an encouraging 43 before a string of eight dot balls from Munaf brought a brain-fade as Hafeez tried a premeditated paddle sweep from outside off stump and edged behind to Dhoni.

Soon after, the loss of Asad Shafiq brought the Mohali crowd to life, when he tried to cut a Yuvraj delivery that was much too full and straight, and the middle stump was knocked back. Shafiq had made 30 and had displayed a cool temperament until that point, but the required run-rate started to balloon, and Pakistan never recovered.

But while India have booked a place in the final, they must hope they haven't used all their good fortune too soon. Tendulkar might be the finest batsman of his generation, but today he was the luckiest, dropped on 27, 45, 70 and 81. It seemed as though he was going to bring up his 100th international century with one of his least convincing innings.

Misbah at midwicket was the first to put him down, before Younis Khan spilled a regulation chance at cover, both off the bowling of Afridi. The third opportunity came when Kamran Akmal didn't move his hands quickly enough to a thick edge, again off Afridi, and while that was a tough opportunity, a pull to Umar at mid-on from the offspin of Hafeez should have been taken.

Before he had any of those lives, Tendulkar had survived two very tight calls on 23: an lbw decision that was given out by Ian Gould but on review proved to be spinning down leg, and a near-stumping the next delivery when he just got his back foot down in time after losing his balance reaching outside off. When Tendulkar was finally taken at cover by Afridi off the bowling of Ajmal, Pakistan's relief was evident.

Soon after, a scratchy Dhoni, who was also dropped by Kamran, made the mistake of challenging Simon Taufel on an lbw decision. Dhoni had 25 when he missed a Riaz delivery that pitched just in line and was hitting the stumps. It was the second outstanding call by Taufel, who had given Virender Sehwag lbw in a similar fashion earlier, even though the left-armer's angle meant pitching outside leg was a possibility.

Riaz was the man who Afridi had to thank for keeping Pakistan in the contest after India made a strong start and reached 114 for 1 off their first 18 overs. After Gautam Gambhir was stumped wandering down the pitch against Hafeez, Riaz grabbed two wickets in two balls - Virat Kohli caught at backward point and Yuvraj bowled by a low full toss for a golden duck.

Nobody looked as fluent as the crease as Sehwag, who took 21 off Gul (0 for 69) from the third over of the innings. What looked like a 300-plus total in those early overs became 260 when Suresh Raina helped them recover from their middle-order failures.

It was enough, but India's batsmen will need to improve if they want to lift the trophy on Saturday. For now, they can dream of their first World Cup in 28 years.

India beat Pakistan to enter the World Cup final

Mohali: India vanquished Pakistan here tonight to storm into the final of the cricket World Cup in a high-voltage match watched by the Prime Ministers of the two countries and millions of passionate fans across the sub-continent.

Sachin top-scores with 85 as India post

The 29-run victory, which enabled India to maintain its unbeaten record against the arch rivals in 36 years of World Cup history, was the result of some brilliant bowling and fielding show by the home side after its much-vaunted batting line-up had posted a modest 260 for nine to which man-of-the match Sachin Tendulkar made a lucky 85-run contribution.

India now meet Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai on Saturday in a bid to win the coveted Cup for the second time since it first stunned the cricketing world by beating West Indies in 1983 at the Lords. Batting first after winning the toss, India was restricted to 260 for nine largely due to brilliant bowling by fast medium bowler Wahab Riaz who took 5 for 46.

Given an even chance to overhaul this total, Pakistani batting crumbled before some brilliant bowling by three Indian seamers -- Ashish Nehra (2/33), Zaheer Khan (2/58) and Munaf Patel (2/40) as well as two spinners Harbhajan Singh (2/43) and Yuvraj Singh (2/57).

Pakistan were all out for 231 runs in 49.5 overs to leave India deserved winners before a boisterous crowd that included power personalities such as Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, union ministers, glamour from Bollywood besides Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Yousuf Raza Gilani who were present when the final ball was bowled.

Zaheer Khan took the last wicket of Misbah-ul Haq to send a capacity crowd at the PCA stadium into a frenzy.

The jubilant Indian team members hugged each other nd took the stumps as souvenirs and the support staff at the dressing room also broke into celebration to cherish the moment of triumph which brought hopes of India regaining the coveted trophy after a gap of 28 years.

Virender Sehwag (38) and Suresh Raina (36 not out) were the other notable scorers as many of the Indian batsmen got the starts but could not translate them into big knocks. For Pakistan, pacer Wahab Riaz was the pick of the bowlers with a career best 5/46, eclipsing his previous best of 3/22 against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 2008.

The Indians then came up with a disciplined bowling show and some brilliant fielding to choke the Pakistanis who got a good start but lost their way in the middle overs. Misbah-ul Haq (56) Mohammad Hafeez (43), Asad Shafiq (30) and Umar Akmal (29) were the notable scorers.

Sachin top-scores with 85 as India post

Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar capitalised on six reprieves to crack 85 while Suresh Raina provided the late sparks as India posted a competitive 260 for nine in their high-voltage World Cup semifinal clash against arch rivals Pakistan here today.

Tendulkar, however, could not make the most of the Pakistani fielding lapses as he missed his 100th international ton as the hosts lost wickets at regular intervals on a PCA track which offered some assistance to the bowlers.

Virender Sehwag (38) and Raina (36 not out) were the other notable scorers as many of the Indian batsmen got the starts but could not translate them into big knocks in a highly surcharged match watched by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani and a host of other dignitaries.

For Pakistan, pacer Wahab Riaz was the pick of the bowlers with a career-best 5/46, eclipsing his previous best of 3/22 against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 2008.

The Indians were at a shaky 205 for six in the 42nd over but some lusty shots by Raina in the power play took India beyond the 250 mark, which is more or less the average first innings total at this ground.Pakistan now need to score at an asking rate of just over five runs an over to make it to the final of the mega event to be played in Mumbai on April 2.

Electing to bat, the Indian innings began with a flourish as Sehwag unleashed a flurry of strokes against the Pakistan pacers, picking up Umar Gul for special treatment by clobbering him for five boundaries in his second over.

The Delhi dasher slammed the third ball of the innings to the cover boundary to complete 1000 runs against Pakistan in his 29th match, thus becoming the fifth Indian batsman to achieve the milestone. Sehwag was at his destructive best in Gul's second over as he spanked him for as many as five boundaries much to the delight of a capacity crowd who lustily cheered every stroke.

Sehwag's belligerence was shortlived as Wahab Riaz, who was introduced in place of Abdul Razzaq, struck in his very first over by trapping him leg before. His breezy 38 came off just 25 balls and contained nine boundaries.

Sehwag attempted to flick the ball to an incoming ball and was rapped on the pads. The Indians asked for a review of umpire Simon Taufel's decision and television replays showed that the ball would have indeed hit the middle stump.

After Sehwag's dismissal, Tendulkar took upon himself the responsibility of scoring the runs quickly and an exquisite glance of Gul to the fine leg region stood out. Tendulkar then produced another stunning shot off Riaz as he crouched on one knee and played the square drive to the point boundary, in the process completing 400 runs in the World Cup for the third time.

    India vanquished Pakistan here tonight

With runs coming easily, Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi introduced spinner Saeed Ajmal in the ninth over of the contest and the off-spinner conceded just three runs. There was a lot of drama in Ajmal's third over as Tendulkar survived two appeals of consecutive deliveries.

Umpire Ian Gould first upheld a leg before wicket appeal against Tendulkar who asked for a review. Television replays showed that the ball would have missed the leg stump and the decision was overturned.

The very next ball, the Pakistanis appealed for a stumping chance and again the verdict went in Tendulkar's favour, drawing thunderous cheers from the crowd. A few minutes later, Tendulkar got a reprieve when he was on 28 as a diving Misbah-ul Haq dropped a catch at the mid-wicket region with Shahid Afridi being the unlucky bowler.

Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir put on 68 runs for the second wicket in 13 overs before Mohammad Hafeez struck for his team by evicting the left-hander with a lovely flighted delivery. Gambhir stepped out to drive the ball through the gap but was deceived by the flight and Kamran Akmal whipped off the bails in a flash to leave India at 116 for two.

The Pakistanis gave Tendulkar another 'life' when he was on 45 with Younis Khan dropping a catch at the extra cover region with Afridi being the unlucky bowler again. Tendulkar then hit Afridi over the extra cover boundary to notch up his 95th ODI half century.

Virat Kohli, who joined the action after Gambhir's departure, never looked comfortable in the middle and Wahab Riaz brought an end to his vigil soon. Kohli played a strange shot and offered a simple catch to Umar Akmal at backward point. A hushed silence descended at the stadium when local boy Yuvraj Singh was dismissed for a first-ball duck, leaving India in a spot of bother at 141 for four.

Tendulkar and Dhoni then tried to steady the innings by curbing their strokeplay and playing cautiously. They were quite content to keep the scoreboard moving with gentle pushes and nudges while dispatching the loose deliveries to boundary.

Tendulkar, who was having a charmed life, was dropped for the fourth time by Umar Akmal at wide midwicket as the champion batsman attempted to pull the ball. It was Hafeez who was the unfortunate bowler.

But in the very next over, Tendulkar finally ran out of luck with spinner Ajmal getting the prized scalp. He went for a stinging drive but could not really time the ball well and Afridi, unlike his teammates, did not make a mistake at short extra cover. His knock of 85 came off 115 balls and was laced with 11 boundaries.

Dhoni, who was dropped by wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal on 24, could not capitalise on the reprieve as he became Riaz's fourth victim, trapped leg before to a sharp incoming ball. Dhoni went for the referral but without luck.

Dhoni: We read the wicket wrongly

Dhoni: We read the wicket wrongly

Mohali: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted that he had read the wicket wrongly, and made a mistake by playing three seamers.

Dhoni: We got off to a great start. But, as the game progressed, scoring became hard and we had to consolidate. We decided to go for a par score and 260 was a very good score. The pitch was offering some turn and we read the wicket wrongly. We went in with three seamers and this is one game where I am glad that I did not have it use any extra bowlers. Bowling slowly and on a length is Munaf's strength and Ashish is a rhythm bowler. It is a dream to be in the final. We did not have easy games throughout the tournament and nothing comes easy. We have chased some few decent totals and everybody has been tested. We are ready for the finals but we have to be careful.

Tendulkar: I would like to thank everybody in Mohali for the terrific support. The team played brilliantly. The way we bowled and fielded was awesome. Initially, Viru got us off to a flier and we had to take our time and play out the spinners. We kept losing wickets which we did not want. Raina played well in the end. When we started, we thought about 300-310. Going back to Mumbai is a great occasion. We want to focus on the job that is ahead. All the five matches against Pakistan have been memorable.

Afridi: Firstly, I would like to congratulate India on such a great victory and I wish them all the best for the final. The guys played well and I am glad to be the captain of such a team. Riaz bowled well. When we got Sehwag, we decided to put some pressure. We missed some opportunities in the middle and they played well. We did not build a partnership and we played some irresponsible shots. We tried to play two or three overs and we decided to take the Batting PP after that. I would like to say sorry to my nation that we fell short.

Magic moments from India-Pakistan World Cup encounters

Will Kamran Akmal taunt Dhoni with a frog-leap? Can Gambhir do a 1996 Aamir Sohail and take a jibe at Umar Gul? What imprints will the Indo-Pak semis clash leave on the sands of time? The World Cup rivalry between these two teams has always been a riveting and intense affair. MSN India brings to you all those magic moments.

India v Pakistan at the World Cup

When an Indian or a Pakistani cricket fan scans through a World Cup schedule they search for one game: India v Pakistan. The dates are earmarked months before the start of the event.

If the match is happening somewhere near, a run to the stadium is made in search of tickets. Bunking school or office on the D-day is not ruled out of question. In small towns across India streets turn empty. In big cities the pubs are jam-packed.

Each and every India-Pakistan game is a nerve jangling affair for the players and the fans. And when the scene shifts to the World Cup cauldron, the intensity often overpowers the quest for the championship win. The World Cup can be conceded, but a loss against Pakistan on cricket's biggest stage is devastating.

Both the teams have clashed four times on the World Cup stage with India having an upperhand. But India-Pakistan encounter goes a step beyond the win-loss and the stats column. All the four matches have a story to tell, a squabble to report or a run-in to write about. MSN India rewinds to those games and relives all the tension and the drama.

India v Pakistan at the World Cup

1992 Benson and Hedges World Cup

    Date: March 4
    Venue: Sydney Cricket Ground
Margin: India won by 43 runs

Years down the line, India's 43-run win in Sydney became inconsequential in front of the drama which happened in the match. Pakistan's Javed Miandad, who wouldn't take a step back in any contest and Indian wicket-keeper Kiran More, who just couldn't resist needling the Pakistan batsman, served up a moment which the purists would disapprove of, but the fans from both the countries would relish and recall generations ahead.

A flustered Miandad stopped Sachin Tendulkar in his run-up and turned around to tackle the chatterbox More. Miandad turned towards umpire David Shepherd and lodged his complaint with More vociferously pleading his case from behind. What followed this ruckus was to be etched in the history of India-Pakistan cricket. Miandad performed a vigorous frog-leap which would have put the croaking contingent to shame.

India though had the last laugh in the match as Pakistan folded 173 runs in reply to India's 216, which was mostly because of Sachin's attacking 54 and an even more aggressive 26-ball-34 from Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev. The Indian bowling attack led by three pacers, Kapil, Manoj Prabhakar and Javagal Srinath rallied to hold Pakistan much before the finishing line.

India v Pakistan at the World Cup

    1996 Wills World Cup

    Date: March 9
    Venue: M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore
Margin: India won by 39 runs

India and Pakistan met each other in a pulsating quarterfinal encounter. On the knock-out stage the stakes were high and so were the passion of the fans. Wasim Akram's pull-out just minutes before the match was greeted harshly as fans across Pakistan smelt a conspiracy in the move. The captain's effigies were burnt in the streets of Karachi and Lahore.

India won the toss and in front of a packed Chinnaswamy started to build a mountain of runs for Pakistan. Navjot Singh Sidhu finished 7 runs short of a century after Sachin went for an uncharacteristic 59-ball-31. India ended with massive 287 runs. The big score largely achieved thanks to some belligerent hitting from Ajay Jadeja, who took Waqar Younis apart in the final overs of the match. Jadeja smashed 45 in 25 balls, which included a 22-run feast off one Younis over. India racked 57 runs in the last four.

Chasing the huge target Pakistani openers Saeed Anwar and stand-in-captain Aamir Sohail launched a solid reply. It seemed as if 287 runs would be overhauled in no time. The breakthrough arrived when Anil Kumble had Anwar caught for 48 by Srinath in the deep. Indians heaved a sigh of relief but the misery did not end there. At the other end Sohail was going all out; with the bat and his tongue.

After smacking Venkatesh Prasad for a boundary he pointed the bat toward the direction of the four to rub in the assault. Prasad though made sure that his reply would be more than just words. And it came in just the next ball. Sohail tried to hit another Prasad-delivery to the fence but only managed to clean bowl himself. The crowd roared as a charged Prasad dished out the four-letter word to Sohail. The opener's wicket was the turning point as the Pakistan line-up crumbled under the pressure of a high run chase.

India v Pakistan at the World Cup

    1999 ICC World Cup

    Date: June 8
    Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester
Margin: India won by 47 runs

The stiffest test of an India-Pakistan cricket rivalry came against the background of the Kargil battle. Both the nations were in the throes of a war being fought in the rugged environments of Dras sector and Tololing ranges. It was almost given that the battle in the high grounds would find a face in the World Cup encounter between the two sides. The atmosphere was charged up and there were massive security arrangements to ward off any untoward incidents.

In such emotionally charged conditions India chose to bat first. Tendulkar's 45, Azhar's 59 and Dravid's 61 helped India set a target of 228 runs in front of Pakistan. Pakistan's reply was littered with wickets at regular intervals, five of which were bagged by Venkatesh Prasad.

When Wasim Akram's attempted hoick over midwicket landed into the hands of Kumble, India registered perhaps their most satisfying win over Pakistan in cricket. Unlike the first two India-Pak World Cup encounters the Manchester game did not see much friction between the players of the two teams. Perhaps any offense from their side would have sparked a major row in the stands. The match though was not without some blemish. Wisden Almanack reports 'three arrests, nine ejections, and one Indian flag burned during some scuffling at the close.'

    2003 ICC Cricket World Cup

    Date: March 1
    Venue: SuperSport Park, Centurion
Margin: India won by 6 wickets

India's victory over Pakistan was the cornerstone of the side's remarkable run to the final of the competition. And at the centre of the win was India's biggest cricket star: Sachin Tendulkar. Saeed Anwar's 101 runs guided Pakistan to an imposing total of 273 runs. With the likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar in the bowling ranks the challenge of overhauling the target was always going to be tough. India needed Tendulkar to fire and he did so with a mix of ferocity and grace.

The Indian batting legend went after the bowling right from the first over. And it was then that the most memorable shot of an Indo-Pak cricket match was invented. Tendulkar heaved a wide delivery from Akhtar over the third man region for a six and made his intentions crystal clear. He continued to take the game away from Pakistan churning out an array of breathtaking shots and playing as if he could do no wrong. The only discomfort Sachin got was through his own body which suffered under a bout of cramps.

Finally, a snorter from Akhtar saw Sachin going back to the pavilion on 98. Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh then combined to take India to their fourth consecutive win over Pakistan in a World Cup game.
