25 august (tuesday) | Muktangan Rangalaya (Rashbehari crossing, Kalighat Metro) | 6 pm
Documentary screening, as part of country-wide protest screening:
MUZAFFARNAGAR BAAQI HAI
-A film by Nakul SIngh Sawhney
(2014/135 mins/Hindi with English subtitles)
About the screening: Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai is a documentary film that digs deep into the pre-election riots and anti-Muslim pogrom that shook Shamli and Muzaffarnagar districts of western UP, killing more than 100 and displacing 80,000 people. The film had its premiere screening in India during the 2nd Kolkata People's Film Festival last January.
Very recently the film was stopped midway by goons of ABVP, the BJP's student wing, while it was being screened in Delhi's Kirori Mal college. The goons went on a rampage and heckled the filmmaker, students and senior professors. A protest screening in JNU was also met with obstacles. As a mark of protest, and also to mark our unity against such suppression of voices of truth, justice and dissent, Cinema of Resistance decided to screen the documentary at all our chapters across India on the same day - 25th August. We also gave a call to other cultural and democratic groups to arrange country-wide screenings.
In less than a week, we have received confirmations of over 30 shows in 24 towns spread across 16 states. More confirmations are pouring in.
For friends in Kolkata: Cinema of Resistance (Kolkata Chapter) urges you to attend the solidarity screening at Muktangan Rangalaya auditorium (Rashbehari crossing, Kalighat Metro) as a mark of solidarity. Even if you have seen the film before, we hope you would turn up at this solidarity screening.

ABOUT US: Cinema of Resistance (Kolkata Chapter) organizes an annual film festival, called the Kolkata People's Film Festival, in January. Throughout the year, we organize monthly film screenings in Kolkata and also travel in Kolkata and its neighbouring districts (such as North and South 24 Pargnas, Hooghly, Howrah, Birbhum, Nadia etc.) to screen films and hold discussions/dialogues on invitation from non-funded like-minded groups, unions and organizations. We are particularly interested in screening amongst workers, women, children and young adults, civil society groups and folks in general who are allies of people's movements.
To organize a show in your locality please write tocor.kolkata@gmail.com, or leave a message at 9163736863. We will get back to you.
To join our initiative, please contact us in the manner above, or simply turn up at one of our screenings for a face-to-face chat!
