Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) has the pleasure to welcome the
latest order of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India.
The NHRC, acting on a complaint of ACHR against the extrajudicial of R K
Sanjoaba, the nephew of former Manipur Chief Minister R K Jaichandra Singh
on 20 October 2004, in its order dated 28 January 2010 directed the
State government of Manipur to report about 111 cases of fake encounters
(an Indian lexicon that presupposes an armed encounter before killing in
order to justify extrajudicial executions) not reported to the NHRC by 26
February 2010. The NHRC also directed the State government of Manipur to
submit proof of payment of Rs 500,000 to the next kin of the victim.
The order of the NHRC is historic considering the systematic fake
encounter killings by the Manipur Police under the guise of joint
operations with the Central armed forces. India's leading news channel,
CNN-IBN stated that the Sanjaoba case has opened a can worms.
