To: SOA@yahoogroups.com
Hello all,
Today the notorious police torturer Jon Burge faced a sentencing hearing in Chicago. (In June he as found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice.) At the hearing, some of the police torture victims testified what it was like to be tortured by Burge and his detectives and how their lives were ruined by endless years in prison. And there are still at least 23 torture victims that remain locked up in Illinois prisons with no idea if or when they will ever get out.
Members of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, along with former torture victims, family members and activists from many different organizations were at the court house today. We held a press conference downstairs in the federal court building.
Click on this link and you will hear Mark Clements talking to the press. Mark spent 28 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. He was picked up and tortured by Burge's police force when he was only 16 years old.
Burge's sentencing hearing continues tomorrow. The judge may sentence him at the end of the day.
We will keep you all informed.
